Several years ago, I was having a 1/3 life crisis. The world wasn’t feeling as wide as it used to be. In fact, it had started to feel increasingly narrow. Having emerged from my 20′s, the thought of where my life was headed felt more like a prison sentence than an exciting adventure, so I decided to fly to the continent and spend 2 weeks away from my normal routine. In that time, I was reminded that life is as exciting or boring as I want it to be.
I had always wanted a tattoo, but was never able to settle on a design. Whatever I chose to emblazon on my skin for all eternity, needed to be profound, timeless, and after my revelation on the road, serve as a daily reminder of life before and beyond the present. The one that seemed fitting was a spiral, which is also seen throughout indigenous symbology, like the Māori koru.
Today, whenever I feel stagnant and saddled down in permanency, I glance at my wrist and am reassured that I am in a never-ending journey of birth and rebirth. Shortly thereafter, I’m bounding off to another adventure.
